This festival is being presented from Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 8 by The Dancers of Damelahamid in partnership with the UBC Museum of Anthropology. The Festival is a celebration of the stories, songs and dances of the Indigenous peoples of the northwest coast of North America. There will be dance groups from the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Kwakwakawakw, Gitxsan, Tsimshian, Nisga'a, Haida, Tagish and Tlingit Nations. Guest artists from across Canada, as well as international groups from New Zealand & Australia, have also been invited to share their traditions. Tickets for the Signature Evening Performances are $25, and Festival Stage Performances are $16.75. This Festival has been happening since 2008 and is a wonderful way to experience the lived traditions of these nations.

SheTalks

Source Material: http://shetalksyvr.ca

The first annual SheTalks Conference is happening this Saturday, March 7 at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey. It features 15 female speakers, talking about how they are changing their world, and how they view the role of women as innovators, leaders, creators and change makers. Tickets are $40 and includes a lunch. All proceeds from the event will go to the SheTalks Scholarship created in conjunction with Simon Fraser University. This is a great opportunity for women to hear from other women in leadership positions and network with other women.

Please note the deadline to apply is September 12, 2014.

Are you an First Nation, Inuit or Métis PSAC member who would like to learn more about your union?

If yes, we invite you to apply for the PSAC BC National Aboriginal Peoples’ Circle (NAPC) course.

We are holding a NAPC course for First Nation, Inuit and Métis members in BC in Richmond on October 25 to 27, 2014. To be eligible for the course, members are asked to self-identify by completing the following form: http://psacbc.com/self-id

The NAPC course is for members who have had little or no exposure to their union and would like to learn more about it.  During the course participants will learn more about:

  • the role of the union in advancing Aboriginal rights in the workplace, the union, and our communities;
  • resources and decision-making in the PSAC;
  • how to become more active in the PSAC through local, regional and national structures.

All expenses related to participation in the course will be covered by the PSAC (travel, accommodation, meals, loss of salary, family care costs) in accordance with the PSAC Travel Policy. Local participants will receive the $50 education per diem for each day of the course to cover mileage and meals.

Participants at each course will have the opportunity to meet and work with other PSAC BC Aboriginal members, the PSAC BC Regional Council Aboriginal Equity Coordinator – Sister Ruby Langan, and the two BC representatives on the PSAC’s NAPC – Sister Nancy Burton and Brother Michael Ballard.

Rally to Support BC Teachers

BCFed Poster
To demonstrate support for the BC Teachers’ Federation, the BC Federation of Labour has launched a series of efforts to raise awareness of the dispute, the issues that are at the heart of negotiations, and to provide venues for people to show their support. Here in Vancouver, there is a rally scheduled for Friday:
  • Date:  Friday, September 19, 2014 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • Location: BC Liberal Cabinet Office, Vancouver - 999 Canada Place Plaza

We will be there: look for the PSAC flags!

For a full list of rallies across the province, and other ways to support BCTF members & public education, visit the BCTF website.
If you are a parent and would like to donate all or part of Christy Clark's bribe of $40/day/child-under-age-13  to the teachers' strike fund, you can do so through Families Funding Teachers, set up by a local parent. All money goes to the PayPal account of the BC Teacher’s Federation, and will be directed toward their strike fund. We can support our union brothers and sisters.

PSAC Boycotts Public Service Week

Boycott

From the PSAC website:

After years of service cuts, job cuts and disrespect for hard working public servants, the federal government will hold National Public Service Week from June 15 to 21, 2014, to mark the importance of federal public service employees and to recognize their service to Canadian society.

It is an insult to our members that the government of Canada, as the employer, celebrates this event while it continues its assault on federal public services and public service workers.  It continues to cut services to the Canadian public, slash public-service jobs and attack collective bargaining rights, health and safety protections and retirement security.

PSAC boycotts Public Service Week; holds events defending public services instead

The PSAC is boycotting National Public Service Week and will be organizing events across the country to celebrate the work our members do to serve Canadians. We will use these opportunities to raise awareness about how the cuts by this government are affecting all Canadians.

We urge all our members to check with their regional office or Component for information on activities during that week.

------

Please join us on Thursday for a lunch and learn in Leylum where we'll hear the latest about bargaining.
